I t was past dark when Jean called. As she predicted, it had been a busy Monday. She had been swamped all day with her regular medical practice and was now on her way home, driving south on the 101 to Newport. But she had spoken with the Lane County ME and wanted to give them a report before she got home. She and her husband had a no-tech policy at dinner.

Logan put her on speaker.

“I wish I had something more substantial to report,” Jean said. “Bart did the autopsy today, but he says it’s a nothing burger. No signs of a struggle, no wounds except a bump on her head from falling on the floor. He thinks it looks like natural causes, probably a heart attack.”

Logan’s heart fell. She was hoping he’d find something. Something that explained the violence done to Evka’s office and the threatening message left on the whiteboard.

“Is that what he’s putting on the report? What about the office being trashed? Are they just going to ignore that?”

“Bart’s job is to report medical findings,” Jean said.

Logan let out an exasperated sigh. Jean was right, but she didn’t like it. Neither did Sam. She butted into the conversation.

“He has some discretion, right?” Sam said.

“Hang on,” Jean said. “Don’t get your panties in a wad. Bart’s a professional. And he’s careful. He’s holding off on filling in the cause-of-death box until he’s sure. He’s sending off for a tox screen, but if it comes back negative, he’ll have to go with natural causes. All signs point to a heart attack.”

“If they find some kind of poison, that means she was killed, right? She wouldn’t be stupid enough to accidentally poison herself,” said Logan.

“Let’s wait for the tox results,” Jean said.

“And how long will those take?” Logan asked.

“Depends, but even with a rush, it can take two or three weeks. Usually it’s four to six,” she said. “When the cops wrap up their investigation, that’s it.”

While they were talking, Logan turned the gas fireplace on. She and Sam migrated to the living room.

“Any idea how that’s going?” Logan asked. “The investigation? How well does Bart know those two detectives . . . Tate and . . . ?”

“Voss, Tate and Voss,” Sam supplied.

“Yeah, he knows them pretty well, he’s worked with them in other cases, although Eugene isn’t really a hotbed of murders,” Jean said. “They may only have four to five a year, max.”

Sam signed an impatient ‘let’s-move-this-along’ rolling motions with her hand.

“So what does Bart know about their investigation?” Logan prodded.

“He says it’s still open. They’re working through interviewing everyone, canvassing the neighborhood, looking for CCTV footage, checking schedules, and processing fingerprints found in Evka’s office and in the room where she was found—eliminating the ones that would show up from people who worked there,” Jean said.

“But whoever killed Evka was probably someone who worked closely with her,” Logan said. “So how does that help?”

“If she was killed,” Jean said. “They have to start somewhere. It’s a slow process.
